Marfa Marfa Marfa In the morning, I ran through a cemetery with hundreds of small white crosses. After lunch, we assembled in the bookstore with the good poetry and theory sections that sat next to the NPR station. We circled to read or show what we’d put together on the journey from Austin. I was barely poeting on the road, but relieved to have managed something.[i] In the evening, we drank penicillin cocktails in a courtyard with tall Texans. After a couple of whiskey drinks, even the chickens looked glorious, but they still paled in comparison to the cantankerous rooster.[ii] Lindsey Freeman [i] The phrase “barely poeting” comes from Pansexual, Anarchist Asian Femme in the New York Review of Books personals. October 8, 2020, p.47. [ii] The glorious chickens are a nod to all of Lesley’s chickens named Gloria, and of course the rooster is Lesley’s own (Stern, Diary of A Detour, 20 and 125 - 127).
